City Council Meetings – Week of 2/2/2025

City Council will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, February 3 at 7:45PM. See Reports Docket and New Docket. NOTE: The Mayor will present the State of the City Address with special guest, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll.

Finance will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, February 3 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request to transfer and expend $393,900 from the General Fund – Current Year Wage Reserve to fund recently settled FY2025-2027 AFSCME 3092/3092B & AFSCME 2443 collective bargaining agreements.
  • Request for authorization to enter into negotiations for potential leases by third-parties for construction, ownership, and operation of on-site renewable solar energy generation (city properties) from which the City will purchase electric output and/or net metering credits
  • Request to accept and expend a $25,600 grant from Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency for technology updates in the Emergency Operations Center.

Land Use will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, February 4 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request to amend a previously approved special permit (Northland) to eliminate five buildings, convert Building 1 from office space to residential use, increase the number of residential units by 22 units, modify building designs of certain proposed buildings, and alter surface and structured parking at 55 Tower Road. Programs and Services will meet in person (Room 211) virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, February 5 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request for a discussion on the new senior transportation system (GoGo Newton). Discussion should focus on (a) the goals and policies of the prior transportation system compared to the current system; (b) comparison on user costs between the prior and current system; (c) how any current policies of the program compare to using Uber or Lyft; and (d) a budget comparison between the prior and current systems.
  • Appointment of Molly Doris-Pierce to the Health and Human Services Advisory Board.
  • Request for a discussion with the Administration, Health & Human Services, Inspectional Services, Sustainable Materials Management and the Law Department for a comprehensive review and evaluation of all management and enforcement options for chronic distressed properties, excessive harborage and rodent infestations within city limits.
  • Reappointment of Edward Chapman to the Parks & Recreation Commission.
  • Reappointment of Matthew Stafford and Asa Fanelli to Health and Human Services Advisory Council.

Public Safety and Transportation‘s regularly scheduled meeting has been canceled (see Meeting Cancellation Notice).

Public Facilities will meet in person (Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, February 5 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request for a discussion with the Department of Public Works regarding public and private stormwater mitigation to improve flooding that can result from the City’s capital improvement projects to reduce inflow and infiltration within the sewer system.
  • Request for a discussion with the Department of Public Works on the work to upgrade the water, sewer, and storm water infrastructure.
  • Requesting a discussion and possible ordinance amendment regarding how water movement between properties is assessed, monitored, and tracked,
  • CPC Recommendation to appropriate $1,471,000 and an additional $204,000 in Community Preservation Act funding from the Unrestricted Prior Year Funds for rehabilitating the basement of the Jackson Homestead and Museum funds for the Jackson Homestead and Museum.

City Council will meet in person (Allen House, 35 Webster Street, West Newton) and virtually (Zoom link) as a Committee of the Whole on Thursday, February 6 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request for a joint discussion with the Mayor and City Council Committee of the Whole including a brief overview of the City of Newton’s finances and input by the City Councilors on priorities for the FY2026 Budget.
