Newton’s nonprofit CAN-DO is partnering with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to offer free tax help to people with low to moderate incomes (generally, $74,000 and below) who are seeking assistance in preparing and submitting their tax returns for 2024 and earlier.

- Gather all the documentation needed to prepare your 2024 and earlier returns (organized by tax year).
- For joint returns, both spouses need to be present.
Information you will need:
- Original Photo ID such as driver’s license, school, state ID or passport for yourself (and spouse if married)
- Social Security cards or verification letter or ITIN for all family members
- All forms W2 and 1099 for all relevant years
- Mileage and expense records for self-employment income (e.g., Uber)
- Childcare provider’s name, address, tax ID number, and amount paid for relevant year(s)
- Copy of the prior years state and federal tax returns
- List of organizations to which you made cash charitable contributions
- Any letters, correspondence or other documents sent to you by the IRS or the state Dept. of Revenue
- 1095-A, B or C, Affordable Health Care Statements and MA 1099 HC proof of health insurance forms
- Bank, credit union, or prepaid card account and routing number
CAN-DO VITA volunteers are trained by the IRS and sponsored by various organizations receive to become certified tax preparers to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.
