The Public Safety & Transportation Committee approved the following (see the report and watch the meeting video):
- Appointment of George R. McMains as Chief of Police: Interim Chief George McMains was recommended unanimously by the search committee for the permanent role. Councilors expressed their support and gratitude for his ongoing commitment to Newton. Chief McMains discussed his priorities, including enhancing recruitment efforts to counter the reduction in applicants and upgrading Police Headquarters facilities. (6-0)
The Public Safety & Transportation Committee voted to hold the following:
- Presentation and Discussion on Residential Parking Programs with Metropolitan Area Planning Council The Committee discussed ways to ‘manage the curb’ if the winter parking ban is lifted. MAPC described it Perfect Fit Parking study and the benefits of reducing off-street parking in developments, include reducing congestion, increased housing affordability, more open space, and improved air quality. MAPC said ‘the supply of parking spaces in Newton is higher than the demand for parking.’ Concerns were raised about managing the high demand for curb space across different neighborhoods. The discussion aimed to explore future directions for residential parking adjustments in Newton. (5-1, Councilor Lucas opposed).
The committee meeting was attended by Councilors Grossman (Chair), Downs, Lucas, Wright, Block, and Bixby, with City Staff including Interim Chief of Police George McMains and Directors Barney Heath and Jenn Martin. Councilors Greenberg and Lipof were absent.
