Newton’s 57th annual Community Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held on January 20, 9AM-11AM at the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (1326 Washington Street, West Newton). Register here.
Under the theme Only When It Is Dark Enough Can You See the Stars, from Dr. King’s final speech, the event will offer reflection, music, student voices, children’s programming with Story Starters, and a community reception.
This year’s featured speaker will be Myrtle Baptist Church’s Senior Pastor, Reverend Brandon Crowley. Other speakers include Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, School Superintendent Dr. Anna Nolin, and students from Newton North and Newton South High Schools.
Musical performances will be by choir members from the Myrtle Baptist Church, soloist Christina Devon, ZOZA Quartet, and the All City Troubadours.
Children’s programming by Story Starters starts at 9:45AM, is recommended for ages 3-8, and is not a drop-off event. It will be based on this reading list.
The Rotary Club of Newton and Village Bank will be collecting nonperishable items at the event for distribution to local food pantries.
