The Newton Turkey Trot is an annual event — featuring both a 1-mile family race and a certified USATF 5K road race — on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, starting and ending at Zervas Elementary School. It started 11 years ago with 100 runners, but this year has grown to 1,700 registered for the event completed on Sunday, November 24.
A group of six volunteer board members have been organizing the Turkey Trot all these years, along with many friends and volunteers who help build it into a community event. The group has major support from the City of Newton, Newton Police officers, DPW, and Mayor Ruthanne Fuller (who starts the race each year). The Turkey Trot is also a successful fundraiser, having provided a cumulative $200,000 to the local charities so far through registration fees, donations, and sponsorships.
The organizers say, “The Newton Turkey Trot is not only a wonderful way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday but also a powerful opportunity to give back. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors and participants, this event has made a lasting impact, contributing significantly to the Newton Food Pantry, Centre Street Food Pantry, and Journey Forward. Together, we are strengthening the fabric of our community and for that we are truly grateful.”
