Across the Commonwealth and the nation, election turnout was lower in 2024 than in 2020. Notwithstanding the many options for voting available, nearly 3,000 fewer voters cast ballots in Newton this year compared with 2020. According to John Doyle, Newton’s Election Supervisor, 47,344 voted on in the November 2024 election, compared with 50,570 voting in the November 2020 election — an approximate decline of 3%. In the 2020 election, there were 62,033 registered voters in Newton, with an approximate 80% turnout.
A similar decrease occurred statewide, where 3,404, 536 voted this year, while 3,631,402 voted four years ago.
Given options to vote by mail, early in-person, or on Election Day, voters participated as follows:
- The largest number – 20,700 (or 44%) – chose the mail/drop box options.
- 18,600 (or 40%) came to their precinct voting place on Election Day.
- 7,023 (or 15.4%) voted early in person, either at City Hall or at Newton North or Newton South high schools, from October 19 through November 1.
Voter turnout was highest in Ward 5, Precinct 4 (voting at Zervas Elementary School) with 81.9% of registered voters casting ballots.
Ward 1, Precinct 1 (voting at Lincoln Eliot) had the lowest turnout, with 69.2 % of registered voters casting ballots.
Citywide, Kamala Harris received 36, 445 votes, and Donald Trump received 8,700 votes.
