What’s Up in Newton – Week of 8/18/2024

Highlights this week:

  • City Council holding no meetings
  • School Committee holding no meetings
  • Community Preservation Committee holding hearings on a Midcentury Architectural Survey and the annual request ($1.75 million) for the Newton Affordable Housing Trust
  • Board of License Commissioners and the Community Preservation Committee each meeting with the West Newton Cinema Foundation as it prepares to move forward with its plans to renovate the cinema it is acquiring
  • Newton Historical Commission considering a local landmark for 19 Highland Avenue, a preservation restriction for 84 Eldredge, and requests for six demolitions and four waivers of demolition delay
  • Funeral services on Saturday for Matthew Jefferson, former President of the Newton Board of Aldermen, who passed away on August 14

City Council

There are no meetings scheduled this week for the City Council or its committees. A joint meeting of Public Facilities and Zoning and Planning has been canceled, and a Land Use meeting has been canceled.

School Committee has no meetings scheduled for this week.

Boards and Commissions

Board of License Commissioners will meet on Tuesday to consider:

  • One-day Temporary Entertainment Licenses for a Boston College concert on September 14 and a Newton Food Pantry fundraiser on October 17
  • Temporary Wine and Malt and Entertainment License for John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club boxing exhibition on September 28
  • New Common Victualler License for Cookie Monstah (839 Washington Street)
  • New Common Victualler and Annual Entertainment License for West Newton Cinema Foundation
  • New Wine and Malt Restaurant, New Common Victualler and Annual Entertainment License for Pink Carrot (27 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill)
  • Business closures: Feast & Fettle (811 Washington Street) and Comella’s (1302 Washington Street, West Newton – moving to Newtonville)

Community Preservation Committee will meet on Tuesday for:

  • Public hearings on Midcentury Architectural Survey Proposal and Newton Affordable Housing Trust FY25 Proposal
  • Pre-proposal update from West Newton Cinema Foundation

Board of Assessors will meet on Wednesday to approve the July 2024 Exemption and Abatement Reports.

Election Commission will meet on Wednesday for high-speed tabulator testing prior to the September 3 Primary election.

Conservation Commission will meet to consider:

  • Second-story addition on existing footprint and walls at 58 Selwyn Road
  • Subsurface infiltration system diverting the Crafts Street storm drain through a turf field and a new chamber system before it returns to Crafts Street and Cheesecake Brook at 250 Albemarle Road
  • Amended order for a violation of plans for an unpermitted hardscape with expanded mitigation planting at 71 Harwich Road

Metropolitan Area Planning Council will hold a hearing on Thursday regarding an appeal of a Certificate of Appropriateness issued by the Newton Upper Falls Historic District Commission for 298-304 Elliot Street.

Newton Commonwealth Foundation’s Request for Proposals (RFP) Subcommittee will meet on Thursday for continued review of the RFP for the 2025 golf course management contract.

Newton Historical Commission will meet on Thursday to consider:

  • Local Landmark Review: 19 Highland Avenue
  • Preservation Restriction Review: 84 Eldredge Street
  • Total Demolitions: 81 Avalon Road, 54 Gammons Road (house and garage), 123 Langley Road, 11 Amy Circle, 17 Warren Ave, 12-14 Cloelia Terrace
  • Partial Demolition: 86 Floral Street
  • Waivers of Demolition Delay: 14 Dorcar Road, 544 Saw Mill Brook Parkway, 28 Cottonwood Road, 97 Bound Brook Road

Newtonville Area Council will meet on Thursday about:

  • NAC Listening Hours at Newton Farmer’s Market on September 14
  • Feedback on road closures and Oakly Spa construction
  • Survey for Fall
  • Ideas for vacant storefronts in Newtonville

Other

Funeral services for Matthew Jefferson, former President of the Newton Board of Aldermen, will be held on Saturday, August 24 at 12PM at Myrtle Baptist Church (21 Curve Street, West Newton). The wake will be held there between 10AM and 11:45AM. Mr. Jefferson, who passed on August 14, was President of the Board of Aldermen from 1978 to 1983 and celebrated his 100th birthday last February, honored by State Senate and House Resolutions and a City Council Proclamation.
