Sangiolo: Why I should be the 11th Middlesex District State Representative

I’m running to be the next State Representative for the 11th Middlesex District. I served for 20 years as a Newton City Councilor and currently work at the Attorney General’s office as a consumer specialist in housing. This is a critical time as we face a number of challenges: a climate crisis, a housing shortage, skyrocketing health care costs, inadequate funding of our public transit and education systems, and attacks on our rights. I have the experience, leadership skills, and commitment to work on these challenges full-time. I have:

  1. Deep experience in getting things done through the legislative process. In my 20 years as a City Councilor, I served as Vice President and led on many issues including protecting our trees, fighting for more funding for our schools, and demanding more from developers, including more affordable units.
  2. A proven track record of delivering excellent constituent service. As a City Councilor, I built a reputation for being accessible and responsive. In my current job, I provide assistance to individuals and families facing eviction and foreclosure and direct them to resources to keep them housed.
  3. Commitment to thorough communication and transparency. I demonstrated this by creating a newsletter in 2015 to keep residents informed about city government, and later I was a co-founder of Fig City News.

As your State Representative, I will:

  • Lead on bold and aggressive climate legislation such as expansion of the bottle bill, require gas companies to safely stop wasteful spending on the old system and prioritize repair rather than replacement of leaky gas pipes, and facilitate the transition off of gas.
  • Work on policies that increase our housing supply for all income levels with particular intention to create more deeply affordable and middle income housing that is accessible for all.
  • Advocate for increased investment in our public transportation system to restore service cuts, and increase accessibility, frequency, and reliability.
  • Support increased funding for education focusing on mental health support and social emotional learning.
  • Push for greater consumer protections for residents, especially our seniors and veterans.
  • Fight to protect our reproductive rights.
  • Bring more local funding for important projects to our district.

I was an effective representative for Newton at City Hall, and I pledge to be an effective representative for Newton at the State House.
