I first met Amy Sangiolo in 2021, and from my first encounter with her, I could tell she was genuine, honest, and sincere. Since then, I have had the privilege of knowing, learning from, and looking up to her. Whenever I raise an issue facing Newton, I am always met with what I’ve come to recognize as the classic Amy “listening face”: steady eye contact, no distractions, and the occasional thoughtful nod. Amy has the ability to make you feel like, in that moment, there’s nothing more important to her than hearing what you have to say, and she consistently takes the time to answer patiently and thoroughly.
Amy embodies the kind of leadership we need; specifically, she is an expert on issues that matter most to young people, such as gun violence prevention and climate change. It’s crucial to have leaders who not only are committed to taking action, but also have the experience and ideas to back it up. Amy is that leader. Her approach is as someone who doesn’t just speak to the community but listens to it, learns from it, and leads with both heart and intellect. While it’s likely not everyone will agree with Amy on every policy issue, one thing is certain: she will always take the time to listen carefully and conduct thorough research before making any decisions.
