Since its beginning as a flag-raising ceremony at Newton City Hall in 2020, Newton’s India Day has grown over time, becoming a multifaceted celebration of the subcontinent’s cultural diversity.
“Every year we see the participation increasing,” said Heena Bhatt, cofounder and the president of the Indian American Community of Newton (IAC Newton), which is organizing the August 17 event. The date was chosen since it’s close to India’s Independence Day, which falls on August 15.
There will be plenty of fun, entertainment, and food during the rain-or-shine event, which will be held 5PM to 8PM at the Hyde Community Center Bandstand (90 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands). Bhatt said IAC Newton volunteers are looking forward to sharing their culture and heritage with all residents.
“India is so diverse within itself,” said Bhatt, who hopes people from many backgrounds will attend the festival, which is made possible with a grant from the Harmony Foundation and several sponsors.
There will be plenty of activities for children, including games, face painting, and henna (temporary tattoos).
“These are really popular with kids,” said Bhatt.
If you’re hungry, Newton’s own Shiva’s Kitchen will be cooking up dosas, which are like stuffed, savory crepes. And if you crave something sweet, there will be an ice cream truck.
While munching on tasty treats, you can also peruse the various vendors, including businesses selling Indian clothing and ethnic jewelry as well as spaces featuring local nonprofit groups.
Musical entertainment is another highlight of the day. Bhatt said there will be instrumental, vocal, and traditional dance performances, including a rock band featuring songs in English and Hindi.
