Humphrey: Why I should be the 12th Middlesex District State Representative

I’m Bill Humphrey, and I’m asking for your vote by September 3rd in the Democratic State Primary for the 12th Middlesex House district of Newton & Brookline.

I’m running because I want Massachusetts to be a Commonwealth for everyone and a beacon for the nation. This race is about what kind of society we want to live in and what kind of communities future generations deserve to grow up in.

I sought public office to ensure people of all ages are represented in the actions we take on our climate emergency, our housing crisis, our struggling transportation systems, and our schools – and that we are continually building an inclusive society that respects basic human rights and a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences.

Our legislature recently concluded its formal session for the term, after a year and a half where they were expected to do full-time professional work on lawmaking for many of these issues. They dropped the ball on all environmental or energy legislation, the maternal health and reproductive rights proposal, the economic development bill, and hundreds of other urgent bills. I don’t accept the premise that we can’t expect better from our leaders.

When our values are put to the test, the leading advocates trust me to fight for what is right and for making the investments in our population that will allow everyone to thrive. We need full-time, engaged leadership from our State Representative for Newton & Brookline, now more than ever. I am proud to have been endorsed by Reproductive Equity Now (formerly known as NARAL Pro-Choice MA), Mass Sierra Club, the National Association of Social Workers Massachusetts chapter, Progressive Mass, and more than half a dozen unions representing nurses and other healthcare workers, educators, building trades, retail workers, and more.

These organizations each have extensive policy ideas for making Massachusetts a better place to live and work. I look forward to collaborating with them, learning from them, and fighting to advance our shared agendas.

I bring to this office my youthful energy, attention to detail, and significant experience: I am a 33-year-old, fifth-generation Newton native; a media professional and policy researcher; an issue campaign organizer; and third-term Newton City Councilor for Ward 5, serving on the Finance Committee. My constituents have come to expect efficient, empathetic, and thorough responsiveness, which will continue as your next State Representative.

Together, we can work towards a brighter future in Massachusetts!
