Zoning & Planning voted to approve the following (see Report and watch the meeting video):
- Discussion and possible adoption of a Fossil Fuel Free ordinance requiring electrification of all new construction and substantial renovations (Item #49-24): Approved 7-0 (Councilor Kalis Not Voting). This ordinance mandates new construction and major renovations in Newton to be all-electric, aligning with the state’s energy guidelines to reduce dependency on non-renewable energy sources.
- Reappointment of James Miller to the Auburndale Historic District Commission (Item #230-24): Approved 8-0. James Miller was reappointed as an alternate member for a term ending on June 6, 2027, recognizing his contributions and ongoing commitment to the commission.
Zoning & Planning voted to hold the following:
- Request for Discussion and Ordinance to require energy use reporting (Item #42-24): Held 8-0. This ordinance would require large property owners to report their energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions annually, aiming to encourage energy reduction in line with the city’s climate goals.
- Requesting an update on the status of implementing the Climate Action Plan (Item #63-24): Held 8-0. The discussion was deferred to a future meeting to allow more time for the review the city’s progress in energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
