Greg Schwartz kicks off campaign with Rep. Ruth Balser’s endorsement

An enthusiastic crowd of more than 60 people filled the Women’s Club in Newton Highlands on June 11 as Dr. Greg Schwartz officially launched his campaign to succeed retiring State Rep. Ruth Balser, who has endorsed him. Current and former members of the City Council, including President Marc Laredo, were present. Halina Brown, Professor of Environmental Science at Clark University, was also there as an endorser. Dr. Schwartz and Rep. Balser both began their political careers serving on the City Council, and Rep. Balser underscored the value of that experience in preparing for the State Legislature.

Emily Schwartz, Dr. Schwartz’s daughter and a college student, told the audience that her father always spoke of the importance of listening to all sides in the decision-making process, assuring people that he is a good listener. Noting that he is a primary care physician, she explained that he is the first point of contact for patients in a system that is difficult to navigate and he is there to help. Barbara Darnell, Vice President of the Newton Highlands Area Council, spoke of his consensus-building skills.

Rep. Balser said, “After serving 13 terms in the State Legislature, I decided to retire at the end of this year. In reflecting on who would be the best person to succeed me, Greg Schwartz stood out. As a practicing physician, former City Councilor, and dedicated community activist, Greg brings a unique set of skills and experience that will make him a strong Representative. He brings a thoughtful approach to the important issues our state faces, including health care, climate, education, housing, and transportation. I am proud to endorse Greg Schwartz to succeed me as the Representative for the 12th Middlesex District….We need a doctor in the House.” she said.

Dr. Schwartz, who is also a lawyer, spoke of his political activism as an undergraduate at Harvard. In addressing health-delivery issues, including the recent collapse of Steward Health Care, Dr. Schwartz believes that working in the State Legislature is essential in finding solutions. “I’ve been a listener, a problem solver, and a healer, “ he said.

Nancy Tener, a Newton Highlands activist, said, “Greg is a highly qualified candidate by his training as a medical doctor and lawyer, by his experience – 8 years on the Newton City Council – and by his personal qualities: integrity and fair-mindedness. There is no contest!”

Ed. Note: We corrected this article because Marc Laredo has not announced any endorsement in the 12th Middlesex District race.
