On June 22, Alex Jablon kicked off his first political campaign, his candidacy for Massachusetts state representative. Jablon seeks the Democratic party nomination for the 11th Middlesex district. The seat is currently held by the retiring Rep. Kay Khan, about whom Jablon spoke highly.
Addressing a group of supporters at the home of Jeff and Donalyn Kahn, Jablon described his background, detailed his priorities as a legislator, and emphasized his youth and his ability as an auditor. Former Newton City Solicitor Donalyn Kahn spoke in support of Jablon, saying she is very happy to see a young person interested in getting involved in the important work of governing.
Jablon said he is a pragmatic progressive who would bring needed perspectives to the legislature. He contends that the Massachusetts legislature currently has more than enough lawyers and would benefit from the diversity benefits brought by an auditor like himself who could improve efficiency in government spending. In addition, he said that, as an apartment renter under thirty years old, he understands well the challenges and difficulties faced by young people seeking to establish themselves in Newton and in all of Massachusetts. He wants to reverse the recent trend of young people leaving the state.
He described his priorities, which are:
- Affordable housing, his first priority;
- Addressing the climate crisis, which he described as an existential threat;
- Improving transparency in government, noting that Massachusetts ranks near the bottom of U.S. in this area;
- Establishing reliable public transportation; and
- Ensuring high quality education.
The primary election to select the Democratic candidate for this race will be held September 3. Jablon is running against former City Councilor and former Mayoral candidate Amy Sangiolo. Jablon said he is looking forward to his NewTV debate with Sangiolo on Thursday, June 27.
Vladislav Yanovsky, a Republican, will face the winner of the Democratic primary in the November general election.
