What’s Up in Newton – Week of 5/26/2024

Highlights this Week: 

  • City offices closed on Monday for Memorial Day
  • Pick-up of trash and recycling delayed by one day (see Holiday Trash and Recycling Schedule)
  • Zoning and Planning discussing electrification of all new construction (and substantial renovations) and requiring owners of large properties to report energy use
  • Countryside Community Meeting presenting an update and discussing swing space

City Council

Zoning and Planning Committee will meet Tuesday to consider possible ordinances to require:

  • Electrification of all new construction and substantial renovations
  • Energy use reporting by large property owners

Finance Committee meeting has been canceled.

Schools

School Committee will meet in Executive Session on Tuesday to discuss a complaint against an administrator.

Countryside Elementary School Community Meeting on Wednesday will include a community presentation and discussion of swing space.

Boards and Commissions

Retirement Board will meet Tuesday, including a public hearing on the retiree cost-of-living increase.

Council on Aging will meet Tuesday for updates on the Cooper Center and Senior Services.

Design Review Committee – Countryside School Building Committee will meet on Wednesday, followed by a virtual Countryside Community Meeting to present an update and discuss swing space.

Newton Commonwealth Foundation, responsible for the municipal golf course, will meet Thursday. 

Other

Memorial Day Services will be held at the Newton Cemetery on Monday, May 27 at 10AM. The wreath-laying ceremony will begin at the Veterans Lot near the entrance and will continue to the next two lots with Newton’s fallen heroes.
