Newton Free Library’s Spring Fling

The Board of Newton Free Library Trustees held its annual Spring Fling Fundraising Gala at the library on May 4.

Former Boston television news anchor Christa Delcamp interviewed the gala’s two guest authors, Drew Faust and George Mumford. 

Faust, noted historian and former president of Harvard University, spoke about her 2023 book, Necessary Trouble, a memoir of her family, youth, race relations in the Virginia of her youth, and her early years as an activist.  

Psychologist George Mumford spoke of his philosophy of life and about his 2023 book: Unlocked: Embrace Your Greatness; Find the Flow; Discover Success.  A Newton resident, Mumford is a mindfulness teacher and performance expert, known for his successful work with elite NBA athletes like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant  

Among the gala attendees were Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, State Senator Cindy Creem, and City Councilors Susan Albright, Martha Bixby, Mark Laredo, Rick Lipof, Julie Malakie, and Pamela Wright. 

In her address at the Gala, Mayor Fuller spoke in support of the library staff and about the vital role of the library in a period of contentious politics.
