The third annual Lions 5K run at Newton South High School was held on Saturday, May 19, in a cool drizzle. In these three years, it has become a cornerstone event for the community, serving as a vital fundraiser for the school’s athletic programs and drawing significant participation and enthusiasm from students, parents, and local residents. This year, 341 runners completed the course (results, photo gallery).
Patricia Gonzalez, Newton South High School Athletic Director, emphasized the importance of this event for the athletic department. “This is an outstanding community effort that supports all athletes and all our programs,” she stated. “The amazing work that the Booster Club brings us all together and has a big impact on our community.”
Gonzales said funds raised from the 5K have been allocated to various needs within the Athletics Department. These include new equipment for the training room, chairs for the basketball court, a scoreboard for the softball field, a golf cart for program logistics, and a sound system. Additionally, the funds have supported air conditioning and maintenance of the press box. Smaller items, such as power packs for the scoreboards, also benefit from this community support.
Gonzales thanked the Booster Club — led by co-presidents Teri Ginsburg and Melissa Dietrich, along with fellow officers Lars Dietrich, Tracy Lin, and Serena Toh — for their role in bringing together the large group of volunteers organizing and executing the event. She said their efforts have been instrumental in securing new banners and other improvements that enhance the school’s athletic facilities.
Last year’s event raised approximately $37,000, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting their local athletes. Gonzales, who has been in role for 10 years, expressed pride in the continuous community engagement and the positive outcomes of the fundraiser.
