Living to 102 by making other people happy… A New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest winner in Newton… And new appointments at Charles River Watershed Association.
- Charlotte Kaner celebrated her 102nd birthday on Saturday at Evans Park with many friends and family. She attributes her longevity not so much to exercise or diet or any particular daily routine but to faith and having many good friends. “I take every day as it comes,” she said with a smile. “I’ve always been that way. I try to make people happy — and I’m good at it; I will say that. I had a good marriage, two sons, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren — and they’ve all been very close and very loving. And now Evans Park is so welcoming.” Granddaughter Madeline Kaner says of her grandmother, “She’s my best friend, basically. She’s always been cool. In her eighties, every Saturday she took us bowling and roller skating.” Somehow, amid painting, cooking, garden clubs, and so much time with family, Charlotte managed to spend forty years working for Cuisinart, demonstrating products in department stores.
- Martin Flusberg has been elected Treasurer — and Brian Kinney and Chris Markiewicz have been named to the board of directors — of the Charles River Watershed Association. Arrianna Proia has joined the CRWA as a Community Organizer.
- Doug Haslam is last week’s winner of The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest, out of 6,323 entries. His caption for the cartoon:
“You say ‘flood’ like it’s a bad thing.”
When reached by Fig City News, he said, “I have had fun entering this contest for years and never expected to win, let alone win it twice. I credit my wife, Pam, for driving me to keep trying. She once suggested a change to an early entry of mine; I didn’t follow her advice, and learned my lesson when someone else won using the caption she suggested.”
