The destruction of Dick McGrath’s Memorial Fountain occurred in winter a year ago.
I saw it a day or two after the destruction. The large bronze fountain was lying on the ground several feet away. I called the City, concerned that someone could grab it take it to a junkyard and sell it.
I saw no signs of front-end debris on the ground, broken glass, chrome, etc. There were two skid gouges on the ground that led straight to the damaged brick.
The impact could have been made by a plow blade attached to a small vehicle like a pickup truck. The blade was up, which is why the first three rows of brick were not damaged.
Between the Turtle Lane delays, over many years, and the neglect of Dick’s Memorial, the area is becoming blighted. That may cause a person who is searching for a house to select another area.I knew Dick McGrath for several decades and know his wife and children. As selectman and State Representative, Dick worked long hours to assist the City and its residents. He did not tolerate an injustice.
Regarding the neglect by the City of his memorial, currently, the only person who would have ensured the fountain would be quickly repaired, was Dick McGrath.
Current politicians should reflect: If such a memorial is erected to their efforts, would they be comfortable if it was smashed, not repaired, turned to rubble, and became an eyesore. Is that a tribute?
Dick’s wife is a good friend of ours, she can sit on the bench and only reflect on the rubble. She and the children did not ask me to send this letter.
Where is the honor and comfort for the loss of a husband and public servant?
We are a better City.
Respectfully,
Bill McEvoy
