Demorizi: Update on McGrath Memorial Fountain

This letter is to address the thoughtful concerns raised in a recent letter published on April 1 regarding the repair of the McGrath Fountain in Auburndale. We share the deep respect for Dick McGrath and all that he did for Newton, particularly his positive impact on parks and recreation for our community. The fountain was struck by a private vehicle. We carefully assessed the fountain after the crash and found, unfortunately, that the fountain was not salvageable. The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department worked to ensure that the replacement fountain meets the character and aesthetic of the area, and is of suitable quality to live as a memorial to Dick McGrath’s powerful legacy. The replacement fountain that we have selected is a commercial grade system that was special ordered and had considerable lead time for manufacturing. We are happy to report that the installation of the replacement fountain is scheduled for this month.

Regards,

Luis Perez Demorizi
