Traffic Council – 3/14/24 Report

The Traffic Council voted to Approve the following (see Report and watch NewTV video):

  • An accessible parking space at or near 5 Murphy Court in Ward 1 for Roger Molloy. The “no parking here to corner” sign on the north side of Murphy Court has been relocated to a point 50 feet west of Adams Street, consistent with the existing location as included in the Traffic and Parking Regulations (TPR). The Committee voted to approve 5-0.
  • To add the Lowell/Austin Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) to the TPR. The RRFB is installed and working properly. Councilor Downs stated that RRFBs should be added to the TPR before installation, not after. The Committee voted to approve 5-0.

The Traffic Council voted to Hold:

  • Changing the 35 MPH sections on Woodward Street in Wards 5 and 6 to a statutory speed limit of 25 MPH. MassDOT approved the current speed limit of 35 MPH many years ago and would need to approve a change to 25 MPH. The Traffic Council took a straw poll vote of 5-0 to send the request to MASSDOT to lower the speed limit to 25 MPH and is waiting to hear back.

If MassDOT approves, the item would be heard again at a future meeting for the Traffic Council to vote No Action Necessary. The change to 25 MPH could then be made administratively in the TPR.

All approved items can be appealed through April 3, 2024.
