Celebrations are in order as Newton North High School wraps up its stellar winter season.
Wrestling
Helmed by veteran coach John Staulo — inductee to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame and recently the New England High School Wrestling Hall of Fame — NNHS wrestling finished off the season with 4 total wins, and Sophomore Madeline Ngo qualified for the All States tournament.
Basketball
On the court, Boys Basketball qualified for post-season play for the 35th consecutive year, and pulled off an impressive 14-6 win-loss record. Team captains, Senior Dillon Taylor and Junior Teagan Swint, led the team in a resounding victory against Wellesley.
Dance
The Newton North Dance Team also saw a remarkable season, winning the Bay State Conference championships for Hip Hop with the highest recorded score in NNHS history. Dance also qualified for Regionals in Vermont earlier in the season and won the New England Dance Championships.
Gymnastics
NNHS Gymnastics smashed records this season, winning the Bay State Championships with the highest score in school history and also placing 6th at the South Sectionals earlier. Among the team’s many accomplished stars, NNHS senior Eva Riesenburger placed 4th in New Englands with a 9.6 on the Uneven Bars.
Indoor Track
Fitting the mold of achievement in sports, Boys Indoor Track shared the Bay State Title for the 27th year straight, sweeping the competition through the excellent play of its athletes. Senior Oliver Altindag ran a 7.94 second time in the hurdles event during the league meet, earning second place, and elevated the 4×200 relay team to victory, while Freshmen Sophie Finkelstein and Blake MacNeal finished 9th and 15th respectively out of 42 in the long jump at the New Balance Nationals.
Swimming
NNHS Boys Swim and Dive likewise ended on a high note. Two juniors in particular, Cody Wong and Clarence De Medeiros, stood out. Wong achieved state qualifying times in both the 50Y and 100Y Freestyle at the sectionals meet, and De Medeiros also qualified for the state championship meet multiple times during the season.
