City Council Meetings – Week of 2/11/2024

City Council will hold a joint meeting with the School Committee in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, February 12 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • State of the Schools: Discussion between City Council and School Committee members. See Presentation [UPDATED version].

Finance Committee‘s regularly scheduled meeting has been canceled. See Meeting Cancellation Notice.

Zoning and Planning will meet in person (Room 205) and virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, February 15 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request for a discussion regarding work plan for the Committee for the new 2024-2025 term.
  • Request for quarterly updates on any potential projects brought to the Planning Department under the new Village Center Overlay District. The updates should include indications of interest and actual permits filed; for which villages and under which zoning districts; number of stories and units. See Planning Memo.
    Chair’s Note: The Planning Department will provide a brief update on the status of the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities review of the VCOD and what potential projects they have been made aware of.
  • Request for a discussion and possible amendments to Chapter 30 Zoning or other City Ordinances to enhance the preservation of existing homes over their replacement by larger and more expensive structures. See Planning Memo.
  • Request for a discussion to consider ordinance amendments that would revise the metrics in the multi-residence (MR1, MR2 and MR3) zones, to regulate the size of new buildings better, enable a wider range of housing options close to public transit, and better incentivize preservation and renovation of existing housing stock.   • Discussion and possible ordinance amendment to deal with grade changes created during construction causing stormwater runoff on neighboring properties. See Planning Memo.
  • Request for a discussion and implementation of a public reporting process for key metrics relevant to the Planning Department.

Traffic Council will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, February 15 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request to consider removal of the accessible parking space at 432 Lowell Avenue as it may no longer be needed.
  • Request for a stop sign at the intersection of Temple Street, southbound, at Fuller Street
  • Request for a stop sign at the end of the Peirce Elementary School parking lot, southbound, at the intersection of Ruane Road.

The agenda notes two administrative changes made to the Traffic and Parking Regulations (TPR) since the last Traffic Council Meeting:

  • Walnut Street south of Highland Avenue: Update made for Walnut Street to reflect the parking meters which have been located in front of the Senior Center since at least 2007
  • Peirce Elementary School Parking Lot between Berkeley Street and Ruane Road: changes made to reflect the one-way circulation pattern from Berkeley Street to Ruane Road. Left turns prohibited, Ruane Road into the Peirce Elementary School Parking Lot; Peirce Elementary School Parking Lot onto Berkeley Street. Right turns prohibited, Ruane Road into te Peirce Elementary School Parking Lot; Peirce Elementary School Parking Lot onto Berkeley Street.
