Newton’s Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jan. 15

Everybody Can Serve — the City of Newton’s 56th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — will be held at Newton North High School on January 15, 9:30AM-11:30AM. Please register online to assist planning.

The event, hosted by the Harmony Foundation and many community partners, will offer reflection, music, student voices, children’s programming (with Story Starters at 10:15AM for ages 3-8 — not a drop-off event), and service opportunities. The keynote speaker will be Dr. E. LaBrent Chrite, President of Bentley University.

Following the program, there will be a reception and service education and lunch for service participants. The service opportunities will be 1PM-3PM in two locations:

  • Newton North HS: Soup in a Jar for Hospitality Homes, Blanket Drive for Welcome Home, Tea Gifts and Cards for Seniors, and a bring-your-own Knitting Circle;
  • Cradles to Crayons: Quality-checking, sorting, and preparing clothing, and shoes for distribution to children in need. Volunteers must register online by January 12.

In the week prior to the event, the Rotary Club of Newton and The Village Bank will host their annual Food Drive to benefit local food pantries.

The phrase “Everybody Can Serve” comes from Dr. King’s sermon, Drum Major Instinct, delivered on February 4, 1968.
