Zoning and Planning – 12/11/2023 Report

The Zoning & Planning Committee voted to approve the following (see Report and watch the NewTV video):

  • Rezoning the lot at 0 Dedham Street (former water tower site). According to the report, neighbors were concerned about lack of notice, what could be built on the parcel. The Petitioner’s attorney stated that the parcel is landlocked, with only three abutters: The Gables, Charles River Country Club, and the one residence at 197 Countryside Road. She added that if the parcel is rezoned, only the owner of 197 Countryside Road has expressed interest in purchasing the lot. In response to concerns, the City Solicitor stated that the Real Property Reuse Committee had discussed the concern about what could be built on the parcel and decided on the open space restriction because it prevents building from being built, whereas a conservation restriction would require it to be kept in its natural state. Regarding notification, the Purchase Department was responsible and complied with state law. The Committee voted to approve 7-0.
  • Reappointment of Peter Vieira and Mathew Montgomery to the Chestnut Hill Historic District Commission. The Committee voted to approve 7-0.
  • Reappointment of Lisa Adams, Florent Mali, Jim Griglum, and Zach Knowlton to the Economic Development Commission. The Committee voted to approve 7-0.
  • Reappointment of Mark Armstrong to the Newton Historical Commission. The Committee voted to approve 7-0.
  • Reappointment of Ralph Abele to the Newtonville Historic District Commission. The Committee voted to approve 7-0.

The Zoning & Planning Committee voted No Action Necessary:

  • Requesting discussion on state guidance for implementing the Housing Choice Bill. The item needs to be refiled for next legislative session. The Committee voted No Action Necessary 7-0.
