Thank you for your coverage of November 18, on the accessibility challenges faced by individuals with mobility issues. Last week, we stopped to take a break during our walk around Newton Centre.
How fitting was it that as we sat on the Newton Centre bench dedicated to Carol & Dick Beard, disability advocates and parents of sons with developmental disabilities that people — including City Councilor Pam Wright, in a wheelchair being pushed by Jenni Acosta, director of curriculum, growth, and technology for Understanding Our Differences (UOD) — were in the park experiencing an exercise designed for City leaders to demonstrate accessibility challenges through direct observation.
Over 45 years ago, Carol Beard started Understanding Our Differences, a disability awareness program to educate and sensitize Newton students and parents. UOD’s presence has made Newton a more respectful and accepting community. However, the challenge continues to create an environment that is accessible and respectful and understanding of differences. As advocates for UOD for many years, we are pleased that Understanding Our Differences and Inclusive Design Newton are working together to advocate for a more inclusive city for people of all abilities.
