Newton is on the precipice of an important decision. A decision that will determine not if Newton changes – all communities change – but how Newton changes.
That decision is embedded in the Village Center Overlay District proposal now before the Newton City Council.
As with every public policy decision, the upzoning of our villages deserves an open, honest and transparent process.
That process should be driven by facts and fairness. Every effort should be made to help the public understand the proposal and what it allows and doesn’t allow.
That’s why we’re calling on the group Save Newton’s Villages to immediately remove the lawn signs on display across Newton that depict a misleading and confusing image of buildings that are considerably taller than anything the Village Center Overlay proposal would allow.
The “Save Our Villages” lawn signs depict what appears to be a nine-story high rise and second building that’s six stories tall.
But, in truth, neither building would be allowed. The vast majority of lots under the Village Center Rezoning proposal would allow buildings no taller than 2½ to 3½ stories, with some locations allowing for 4½ stories and, in limited locations, up to 5½ stories for those that include a larger portion of units for much-needed affordable housing.
We respect that some people may believe that even 2½ or 3½ stories may be too tall. Let’s have that discussion as a community.
But it should be an honest, fact-based, discussion. And the fact is “Save Our Villages” lawn signs are misleading and confusing the public.
We respectfully request that these lawn signs be removed in the interest of honesty and transparency.
If you agree, you can sign on here.
