Diwali, Festival of Lights, Nov. 13

Come celebrate the Indian festival of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, at Newton City Hall War Memorial Auditorium on Monday, November 13, 5:30PM-6:15PM. Diwali is the biggest holiday in India, celebrated across the world by the Indian diaspora. In Newton, many families of Indian origin will be celebrating this important festival with days of preparation and festivity. Diwali is the celebration of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It ushers in a new year and prosperity for the future. The celebration lasts five days, with smaller holidays leading up to and after the main day of Diwali. It is a beautiful holiday full of illumination, colors, friends and family meeting each other, sweets, gifts exchanged, and fireworks. The symbol of Diwali is the diya, a small earthen lamp used to decorate and illuminate the home, a tradition dating back thousands of years.

At a time when there is so much uncertainty, strife and chaos in the world,  Diwali is a happy reminder that good will prevail, bringing light into the lives of everyone.
