Overview of municipal electoral races: Vote Nov. 7

The table above summarizes Newton’s municipal electoral races for this fall. This PDF copy of the table has links to the candidates’ campaign websites. Some observations:

  • Many candidates are unopposed (cells shaded gray): The entire School Committee, three-quarters of the At-Large Councilors, and half of the Ward Councilors will take office in January after facing no opponent.
  • Only 6 of the 24 races are contested races (white cells): Two city-wide races (for At-Large Councilors for Wards 5 and 6) each have three candidates for two seats. And four ward-only races (for Ward Councilors from Wards 2, 4, 6, and 8) each have two candidates for one seat.
  • 11 of 38 candidates are not incumbents (names printed in bold): Of those 11 non-incumbents, 7 are running only in their wards, in four Ward Councilor races. Two more are unopposed in their initial runs for the School Committee. And two others are challenging incumbents for At-Large Councilor seats.

Fig City News will publish profiles of candidates, with priority on those in the contested elections.
