Gaynor: Why I am running for Ward 2 City Councilor

An immigrant from Kiev fleeing antisemitism, my grandfather purchased a cobblestone home on Cabot Street in the 1930’s. Nearly a century later, my wife and I are raising our daughter there.

I served as a Presidential Appointee in the Obama-Biden Administration and am a Newton small business owner. I’ve built bridges throughout our community, including earning the most endorsements–and the most votes in the Ward 2 preliminary election. More than half of the City Council is backing our campaign, as well as noted local organizations like Voters for a Vibrant Newton, Engine 6, Progressive Newton, 350 Mass Action, and the Newton Gun Violence Prevention Collaborative.

This support reflects how, as a City Councilor, I’ll bring a pragmatic, common-sense approach to solving Newton’s hardest challenges. It’s about using objective data and facts, not ideology, as the foundation for making smarter decisions. It’s about balancing progress and preservation of our neighborhoods. Above all, it’s about asking voters informed questions and acting on the answers.

In spite of negative attacks, I’m proud to be running on a platform grounded in facts, policy and positivity.

That starts with smarter development. We must hold developers accountable for our priorities–ensuring our villages are more walkable, affordable, and accessible.

At a time of uncertainty, we must invest in Newton’s crown jewel: our schools. As dad to a future Cabot Elementary student, I’ll push for cutting-edge classrooms, safe athletic facilities, and above all, a fair contract for our incredible educators.

We also need to fight climate change by fixing potholed roads, protecting historic parks and trees, preventing gas leaks, and fighting flooding.

I’m a hometown kid, born and raised here, and I’m running for a singular reason: to ensure Newton remains the best place to live, at any age or income. Call me anytime at 617-947-8550.
