A vote for candidates who support the re-zoning as proposed by the Zoning and Planning committee is a vote to give up your freedom of speech. The proposal before the city council includes a “By Right” standard which means that no public hearings will be held for projects on lots less than 30,000 sq ft. Depending on the assumption of internal footprint that could equate to 8-10 units and may include mixed uses – without public comment.
Public hearings grant the public the right to provide information in favor or against a proposed project. It is critically important in ensuring that the wholly appointed Zoning and Planning body acts in the interest of the affected community. It is the only real check that exists to limit a planning committee’s absolute authority.
Newton, giving up your voice is a dangerous thing.
People can disagree on the re-zoning plan; however, it is never OK for an elected official or appointed committee to take away the public’s right to comment.
There are moderate candidates that want good improvements for our City, and they oppose taking away your rights. The following candidates have expressed an understanding that public hearings should not forfeited:
Ward-Only: Ward 2 – David Micley, Ward 3 – Julia Malakie, Ward 4 – Randall Block (Auburndale), Ward 6 – Lisa Gordon, Ward 7 – Lisle Baker, Ward 8 – Stephen Farrell
At-Large: Ward 1 – John Oliver, Ward 2 – Tarik Lucas, Ward 3 – Pam Wright, Ward 4 – Lenard Gentile, Ward 5 – Rena Getz, Ward 6 – Alan Lobovits, Ward 7 – Marc Laredo, Ward 8 – David Kalis
Thank you for considering keeping your voice.
