Boston College buys Mount Alvernia High School campus

The nearly 90-year old Mount Alvernia High School campus, owned by the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MFIC), was purchased by Boston College for $40.5 million on September 25, according to Mass Land Records.

The twenty-three-acre campus is located across Centre Street from the BC Newton campus and includes three buildings and a garage. A release from the university stated that the property will be used for “educational and administrative purposes.”

The decision to sell the property came almost four months after the high school closed its doors due to declining enrollment – which has dropped steadily since the late 2000s – as well as the inability of the MFIC to continue to live on the property.

Some controversy about the fate of the school surfaced last March, when it was announced that the school would close. At that time, students, parents, and alumni protested with signs, and an online petition stated that the move to sell the property “is not reflective of the values that were instilled in each student” by the school.
