Bakey has opened in Newton Centre at 749 Beacon Street, in the space formerly occupied by Galit’s. The store opened last weekend and is operating as a soft-opening “pop-up” with a limited menu on Saturdays and Sundays, 8 AM-3 PM, while they plan their full renovation to bring in ovens and customer seating.
Store Manager Matheus Muralha explained that, consistent with the company’s theme of “Ridiculously Fresh,” Bakey is rotating fresh baked goods from their bakery in Brookline to Newton every 30 minutes to ensure everything is warm and fresh. The store has low-sugar options and will bring gluten-free items with their full menu once they are up and running. Note that they are currently only able to accept cash and Venmo.
Bakey, which has bakeries in Brookline and Boston, was co-founded by Uri Scheft and Or Ohana. Scheft is “an internationally renowned Danish-Israeli baker who specializes in dough creations that reflect both European and Israeli baking traditions.” In 2016, Scheft authored the book “Breaking Breads: A New World of Israeli Baking–Flatbreads, Stuffed Breads, Challahs, Cookies, and the Legendary Chocolate.”
