I spent some time gathering information about the candidates in the preliminary election just held. A recurring, and exasperating question surfaced yet again: How in heavens name does coaching children’s soccer games qualify anybody to run for any office? I can see that such activities enlarge ones community, which is necessary for political life, but coaching soccer or any other sport as an activity qualifying anyone for civic office is a very long reach, in my opinion. Let’s have more candidates trained in civic organizations such as the League of Women voters, the ACLU, the Newton Conservators, or serving on a City commission. Coaching children’s sports should not be a stepping stone to elected office.
