Eagle Scout Project: Wayfinding signposts in Cold Spring Park

Cold Spring Park now has nine new wayfinding signposts to guide hikers on a stroll and — in emergencies — to speed the arrival of help. After two years of planning and preparation, the signposts were installed by a team led by Life Scout Owen Serra as his Eagle Scout public-service project. The project is sponsored jointly by Scouts BSA Troop 209, the Friends of Cold Spring Park, and Newton’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Culture.

The new signposts indicate directions and distances to park entrances, parking, and key landmarks such as the dog park and Zervas Elementary School. QR codes on the signs will also link users to a digital map of the park, and each signpost has a unique code to help 911 services pinpoint its location in an emergency.

(Note that these wayfinding signposts are completely separate from the orienteering control points that are installed on a different set of posts in Cold Spring Park, as well as in other parks in the city.)
