Overview of municipal electoral races this fall: Preliminary Election, Sept. 12

The table above summarizes the municipal electoral races for this fall. This PDF copy of the table has links to the candidates’ campaign websites. Some observations:

  • Many candidates are unopposed (cells shaded gray): The entire School Committee, three-quarters of the At-Large Councilors, and half of the Ward Councilors will take office in January after facing no opponent.
  • Two run-offs are needed (cells outlined in red): Two ward-only races — for Ward 2 Councilor and for Ward 6 Councilor — each have three candidates, so there will be a Preliminary Election on September 12 for only those two wards, to allow two candidates in each race to proceed to the November election. Fig City News has published profiles of all six candidates.
  • There will be four other contested races in November (white cells): Two city-wide races (for At-Large Councilors for Wards 5 and 6) each have three candidates for two seats. And two ward-only races (for Ward 4 Councilor and Ward 8 Councilor) each have two candidates for one seat.
  • One-third of 40 candidates are not incumbents (names printed in bold): Of those 13 non-incumbents, eight are running against each other in Ward Councilor races. Two more are unopposed on the School Committee. And three others are challenging incumbents for Councilor seats.
