As of July 24th, at least 202 Newton cyclists are slated to ride in the 44th Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) on the weekend of August 5-6 to raise funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In this event, the PMC hopes to raise a record-breaking $70 million for cancer research and patient care, which, if achieved, would be the single-largest gift that Dana-Farber has ever received and would bring the PMC’s total contribution in the fight against cancer to $970 million since 1980.
The bike-a-thon includes several one and two-day routes ranging from 25 to 211 miles, catering to all levels of cycling and fundraising ability. (To register to ride, visit www.pmc.org.) One hundred percent of every rider-raised dollar will be donated directly to Dana Farber to support lifesaving cancer research and treatment. The event raises more money than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world.
This will be the 16th PMC ride for Newton Centre resident Ira Hart. Hart rides for Team LUNGSTRONG, which raises funds for innovative lung cancer research. “I lost my sister in 2009 to lung cancer — she was 41 with three kids when she died. I co-founded the LUNGSTRONG team to raise funds in the hopes of someday having families avoid what my family went through.”
“The steadfast commitment of the PMC community year after year continues to inspire me,” said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. “With our sights set on a record-breaking fundraising goal for PMC 2023, I’m grateful for the continued support from all PMC riders, volunteers, donors, and sponsors, and I can’t wait to see everyone out on the road together this August.”
