What’s Up in Newton this week – 6/25/2023

City Council

Zoning and Planning will meet TONIGHT and hold a public hearing on Village Center Zoning Overlay District Zoning Proposal and MBTA Communities Law Compliance.

Finance will meet TONIGHT and discuss an appointment to the Financial Audit Advisory Committee and three appropriation requests: $1,000,000 for the Wash Bay project at Crafts Street, $11,847.54 for settlement of Eastern Bus Company Inc. v. City of Newton, and $90,000 from the BAA Marathon Account for playground improvements.

Land Use will meet on Tuesday and discuss the a request for a Class 2 Auto Dealers License (Yes Auto Sales Group) and five Special Permit requests:

  • Parking in the front setback and reduced stall depth at 437 Parker Street
  • Two attached garages to accommodate four vehicles with more than 700 square feet total and an oversized dormer at 70 Suffolk Road
  • 4-unit, 3 story with ground floor residential use at 20 Clinton Street
  • 4-unit multi-family dwelling at 107-109 Elliot Street
  • Elderly housing with services at 11 Florence and 318 Boylston Street

Programs and Services will meet on Wednesday and hold a public hearing on a citizens petition requesting the Council amend the Tree Preservation Ordinance with certain requirements and provisions.

Schools

The Negotiations Subcommittee will meet in Executive Session on Monday to discuss strategy with respect to collective bargaining with the NTA and conduct a collective bargaining session with the NTA.

The Underwood/Ward Task Force will meet on Tuesday and review the mission statement revision, discuss options, and brainstorm.

Boards and Commissions

Newton Cultural Council will meet TONIGHT and discuss grant modification (“Dinosaur Annex”), finalize and create a distribution plan for the community input survey, receive updates on the grantee reception, and hold an election of officers for FY24.

Planning and Development Board will meet with the Zoning and Planning Committee TONIGHT, Monday, June 16 to hold a joint public hearing on a proposal for a new Village Center Overlay District, consisting of four district tiers, establish requirements for the District, and amend the Zoning Map to include the Village Center Overlay District.

Parks and Recreation Commission will meet TONIGHT and hold 2 public hearings on the Susan G. Komen 3-day Event and the Wellington Free Little Library, and review committee/commission reports.

Council on Aging and Advisory Board will meet on Tuesday and hear updates on NewCAL, the Needs Assessment Project, priorities for next year, and senior services.

Newton Commonwealth Foundation, which operates the public Newton Commonwealth Golf Course, will meet on Tuesday and review reports from the Treasurer, Capital Projects Grounds Report, Pro Shop Report, and elect officers.

Newton Retirement Board will meet on Wednesday and review the PRIM Portfolio.

Newton Free Library Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday and review reports from the President, Director, and respective committees as well as elect an interim treasurer and a slate of FY24 Officers.

Newton Historical Commission will meet on Wednesday and discuss the designation of Waban Hall (89-97 Wyman Street) as a local landmark, 2 requests to waive the demolition delay (29 Faxon, 19 Irvington), a request for partial demolition (49 Westminster Road), 3 requests for total demolition (86 Albert Road, 177 Varick Road, and 577 Grove Street), and a request to amend a local landmark review (145 Warren Street).

Newtonville Area Council will meet on Thursday and discuss the Newtonville Village Center Zoning Survey results, the Newtonville beautification initiative, other issues/projects in Newtonville and an update on Village Day Planning.

Other

Affordable Housing Opportunity: MCO Housing Services is accepting applications for four affordable condominiums at the Bristol Waban Condominiums. These units are deed-restricted and will be made available through an application and lottery process and sold to households with incomes at or below 80% and 110% of the Area Median Income. Buyers are required to have adequate funds for their down payment plus closing costs and be pre-qualified for a mortgage to purchase the unit. The City of Newton is offering grants of $10,000 to eligible applicants through the Down Payment/Closing Cost Assistance Program.
