Senior Center presents to present results of “Aging Together” study, Aug. 14

The Newton Senior Center will host a presentation of the results of Aging Together — a Boston-based study about the complicated relationships of older adult children and their very old parents. The presentation will be on Monday, August 14, 1:30PM-2:30PM at the Hyde Community Center gymnasium (90 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands). Presenters will be Elizabeth Gallagher and Kathrin Boemer of the UMASS Boston Gerontology Department.

Based on interviews with more than 100 pairs of very old parents and their adult children, the study revealed:

  • Conflicted feelings of “empty nest” adult children who thought their caregiving days were behind them,
  • How “old benefits” or “old wounds” influence how parents and children feel about each other now, and
  • Surprising survey results about the level of support that older adults provide their adult children.

Please RSVP by calling 617-796-1675, stopping by the Senior Center’s temporary headquarters at the Brigham House (20 Hartford Street, Newton Highlands), or email eoconnell@newtonma.gov.
