FUUSN Sunday service: Beethoven and Transcendence, Aug. 20

The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Newton (FUUSN) will host an informal Sunday service at 10:15AM on August 20 that explores how music can take us beyond our assumed identities. The ‘physical world’ of Beethoven’s final piano sonata fills no more than 27 minutes of clock time, but through it we can experience a sound world in which time seems to stand still. Lois Shapiro, FUUSN ‘s own concert pianist and music educator, will help us understand the intricacies of Beethoven’s final piano and show us its force, from beginning to end.

Pianist Lois Shapiro “produces and inspires musical magic,” notes The Boston Globe. Ms. Shapiro is a New York Concert Artists Guild Award winner and a sought-after soloist and collaborative pianist. She has appeared throughout the U.S. and abroad in concerts ranging from 18th-century period-instrument performances to premieres. Ms. Shapiro is currently on the faculty of Wellesley College and Rivers School Conservatory of Music, where she teaches chamber music. She is a founding member of the piano trio Triple Helix that served as the Artist Ensemble-in-Residence at Wellesley College from 1999-2012.

FUUSN is located in the heart of West Newton at 1326 Washington Street.
