City Council subcommittee to review Newton police actions at Boston Marathon Wednesday 7PM

The Public Safety and Transportation sub-committee of the Newton City Council will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday at 7PM and discuss the security measures and any incidents during the 2023 Boston Marathon as the first item on the agenda.

Ward 2 At-Large City Councilor Tarik Lucas, who co-docketed the item, said on Monday that he “looks for a robust conversation with the Newton Police Department about the marathon.” He said there have been no updates to the Council since the incident.

On April 17, Marathon Monday, a police bicycle unit, under the command of the Newton Police, responded to notifications from the Boston Athletic Association that spectators from a group cheering on runners of color were entering the course and obstructing runners.

The police formed a line of bikes in front of the group on the course and behind the group on the carriage road. The group of spectators was there to cheer on a large group of runners of color from their teams that were running in the marathon.
