Online auction for Wellington Park play structure near goal, ends May 14

An online auction to fund the construction of an inclusive play structure at Wellington Park is near its goal — and ends May 14.

Wellington Park in West Newton (Kilburn Road) has become one of the most beloved parks in Newton with its beautiful gardens, open fields, basketball and tennis courts, a Little Free Library, numerous benches, and a very popular play structure for younger children.

The Friends of Wellington Park — a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit — has been raising funds for an additional play structure for older kids – the Kompan Sensory Dome – which offers novel play activities, for children of all abilities, that do not currently exist at the park or the surrounding area. At ground level, every activity would be accessible and inclusive, and older kids will enjoy the climbing opportunities. The project was approved last November by the Newton Parks & Recreation Commission, subject to the Friends of Wellington Park raising the necessary construction funds.

The fundraising goal is now within reach, to enable construction this Fall. The online auction is open through Sunday May 14, and all proceeds go to the new Sensory Dome play structure.

Among the auction items:

  • Gold 2022-2023 team-autographed basketball from the Boston Celtics
  • Autographed book by Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen,
  • Tour of Boston Dynamics robot company
  • Birthday magic show
  • Pickle ball starter kit with accompanying lesson
  • Gift cards and services donated many local businesses including the Barn, Bluebird Bar, Cabot’s Ice Cream, Creative Steps Dance Studio, Da La Posta Pizzeria, Depasquale’s, Elements Massage, Frost & Float Spa, George Howell Coffee, Hipstitch Sewing, Joanne Langione Dance Center, Johnny’s Luncheonette, Laundromutt, Learning Express, Little Beats Dance Academy, Pawsh Dog Boutique, MIDA Restaurant, Pondejoy Mochi Donuts, Target, Paddle Boston, Paddy’s / O’Hara’s, Starting Strength, Sweet Tomatoes, Tail Waggerz, and Trader Joes!
