Over 250 people attended the Newton Free Library’s Board of Trustees annual Spring Fling fundraiser last Saturday evening. The event was emceed by Emmy award-winning storyteller and former television anchor, Christa Delcamp, who interviewed guest authors Dr. Robert Waldinger and Tom Perrotta.
Dr. Robert Waldinger is a Newton resident and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Hospital. He is the Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which is the longest study of human well-being ever conducted and is co-author of The Good Life, with Marc Schulz. (Watch his TED Talk here.)
Tom Perrotta is a Belmont resident whose works include Election and Little Children, which were made into Oscar-nominated films, and The Leftovers, which was adapted into a Peabody Award-winning HBO series. His current work, Tracy Flick Can’t Win, is a sequel to Election.
The event raised $5,000 in donations, which will be matched by a generous donor. Donations will help fund the Library’s Library of Things — a small but popular collection that allows residents to try out an item before purchasing, discover and explore crafts and hobbies, or borrow something they need to use only once. Library Director Jill Mercurie relayed a personal story about her younger sister borrowing a sewing machine and a hotspot from the collection.
If you missed the event and would like to make a donation of any amount, you may donate online or send a check to The Trustees of the Newton Free Library at 330 Homer Street, Newton, MA 02459.
