Music Mondays is a women-run nonprofit presenting frequent, live music concerts in the Scandinavian Living Center’s Nordic Hall to audiences of mostly senior citizens. On May 22, 2PM-3PM, the concert will feature the Aryaloka String Quartet of Boston — Beth Welty and Mark Latham, violins; Noralee Walker, viola, and Sandi-Jo Malmon, cello — performing works by four Black composers: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and Jessie Montgomery.
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was a late 19th/early 20th century English composer and conductor. In his day, he was compared to Mahler. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson was named after the former composer, and his music is informed by elements of Baroque counterpoint, American Romanticism, Black spirituals, and jazz. Acclaimed in the early-to-mid 20th century, Florence Price’s soulful music has enjoyed a recent renaissance and appreciation. Jesse Montgomery, born in 1981, is very much in demand as an innovative composer and performer today.
Admission is free and donations are appreciated and go 100% to the musicians. Donations may be made in person by cash or check (to Music Mondays, Inc.) or via Venmo to @Music-Mondays, Zelle to musicmondaysnewton@gmail.com, or checks in the mail (for the mailing address, email musicmondaysnewton@gmail.com).
