City staff seeks your views on California Street District, Apr. 27

The City’s Planning and Development Department will host an in-person meeting on April 27, 7PM-8:30PM, at American Legion Post 440 (295 California Street) to gather thoughts from the public about how the California Street District should evolve in coming decades. What does this place mean to you, and how can we better prepare for the future? This is all part of the City’s California Street Manufacturing District Study.

Director of Economic Development John Sisson notes: “On the north side of the city, a historically industrial zone along the Charles River has evolved into one of Newton’s most diverse places. Around California Street, you’ll find residential neighborhoods, parks and open space, and a wide variety of businesses, including art studios and manufacturers. Future development might see this area become more residential in character. However, for Newton’s fiscal health, the City needs to retain its commercial and industrial tax base, which is already quite small.”
