What’s Up in Newton this week – 2/12/2023

School Committee

The Negotiations Subcommittee of the Newton School Committee will meet TODAY, Monday, February 13, in executive session to conduct a collective bargaining session with the NTA, Units A-E, and discuss strategy with respect to collective bargaining with the NTA.

The School Committee will meet two times to interview Superintendent Finalist Candidates: Wednesday to interview Dr. Anna Nolin, and Thursday to interview Thomas Anderson. Each candidate’s visit will include an online community forum at 5PM and an interview with the School Committee at 7PM. The Committee will then meet on Friday to deliberate, select, and vote to approve a new Superintendent.

City Council

Zoning and Planning will meet jointly with the Planning and Development Board TONIGHT, February 13, to hold a public hearing on proposed amendments to make on-street dining permanent. The Committee will also discuss Village Center Zoning and vote on board/commission reappointments.

Finance Committee will meet TONIGHT to discuss the following:

  • Two requests to accept grants award to the Fire Department:
    • $2,677 grant to purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for Newton seniors
    • $25,600 for technology and protective gear
  • Request to accept a $10,601 bequest from Audrey Cooper’s estate to support programs and services of the Senior Center
  • Request to appropriate a total of $280,000 from two Stormwater accounts to cover the completion of the first phase of the City’s Phosphorous Control Plan
  • Reappointment of James Shaughnessy as a member of the Board of Assessors
  • Request to appropriate $1,500 from Handicapped Parking Fines to engage the Me2/ Orchestra for a concert.

Land Use Committee will meet on Tuesday and hold hearings and discuss requests for:

  • Extending time to exercise a previously approved Special Permit at 1149-1151 Walnut Street
  • Zone change and Special Permit/Site Plan Approval to allow a multifamily dwelling development at 29 Hunter Street. NOTE: The Planning and Development Board will join the discussion on the change of zone request.
  • Constructing a second-story addition as well as an expansion of an existing garage at 616 Boylston Street
  • Amending a previously approved Special Permit/Site Plan Approval to amend the approved FAR granted at 336 Cabot Street
  • Razing the existing nonconforming three-unit multifamily dwelling and construct a five-unit residential dwelling at 194 Adams Street
  • Rear lot subdivision at 176 River Street

City Council will meet as a Committee of the Whole on Wednesday to consider adoption of the Specialized Energy Code.

Programs and Services Committee will meet on Thursday to discuss a maintenance plan for Parks Recreation, and Culture resources, including recreational fields and hold a public hearing on a petition to postpone any immediate action for new or replacement artificial turf pending the completion of certain studies and analysis, and development of a sustainable management plan for fields.

Traffic Council will meet on Thursday to discuss the following requests:

  • Change the parking regulations on a portion of Station Avenue to allow for the installation of an in-street Bluebikes Station
  • Review and assess a change to the parking regulations on Grove Street between Washington Street and Colgate Road
  • Update the Traffic and Parking Regulations to make the Pick-Up and Drop-Off zones on Lowell Avenue between Hull Street and Elm Road permanent.

Boards and Commissions

Commission on Disability will meet for an update on the Me2/Concert and hear a presentation on Elliot House.

Planning and Development Board will join City Council Committees two times this week:

Fair Housing Committee – Lottery Results and Lease Up Subcommittee: John Costello, of Maloney Properties, Inc., on lottery/lease up, Austin street data, and data in general.

Newton Free Library Board of Trustees – Development Committee will meet twice on Tuesday, February 14:

  • 11AM to discuss fundraising report, final numbers for CWM and Spring Fling, and vacancy of Development Officer
  • 2PM to review results of evaluation questionnaires and interviews

Economic Development Commission: Updates from city staff, elect EDC officers for 2023, discuss the 2022 annual report, and formulate goals for 2023.

Auburndale Historic District Commission: Request to relocate 24 Robin Dell and construct a new building to be connected to the existing Town Hall building at Lasell Village.

Community Preservation Committee: Update on current and future Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department recreation projects and review the Pre-Proposal for Phase III of the Gath Memorial Pool Renovation Project ($5,834,362 in CPA Recreation Funding).

Board of Assessors: Review the January 2023 Exemption and Abatement Reports.

Design Review Committee: Lincoln Eliot School and Gath Pool.

Chestnut Hill Historic District Commission will continue discussion on requests to:

  • Install a wrought iron handrail on the front stairs leading up from the sidewalk for safety at 342 Beacon Street
  • Amend the previously approved plans for 70 Suffolk Road
  • Install hardscaping, including retaining walls at the front of the house, and patio and walkway at the back at 12 Acacia Avenue

Urban Tree Commission will meet virtually on Friday to discuss a Forestry Department update, tree removal requests, and the status of proposed changes to City Tree Ordinance.

Other

Planning Department responded to Councilor Wright’s calculation of the number of units approved and in the pipeline.
