Traffic Council – 1/19/2023 Report

The Traffic Council approved the following (see Report):

  • Request to review and change the parking restrictions along Suffolk Road along the curve east of Kingsbury Road to facilitate safe maneuvering
  • Request to review and possibly expand the parking restriction on the section of Greenwood Street between Brandeis Road and Dudley Street, to help improve safety. The Council voted to expand “the parking prohibition between 8AM and 4PM on school days on the south side of Greenwood Street between Brandeis Road and Dudley Road near Newton South High School. This item may be appealed through the close of business February 8, 2023.”
  • Request to prohibit U-Turns on Watertown Street, in both directions, between Edinboro Street and Albemarle Road – near the Newton Early Childhood Program. The item may be appealed through the close of business on February 8, 2023.
  • Request to lower the speed limit from 35 mph to 25 mph on Washington and Tremont Street between Newton Corner and Boston City Line.  Many residents spoke in favor of the change but were concerned about the lack of new speed signs.
  • Request to review and change the mix of long-term and short-term metered parking spaces along Washington Street in the vicinity of Harvard Street. The Council voted to create five two-hour parking meters. This may be appealed through the close of business on February 8, 2023.
  • Request to update the description of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) in the Traffic and Parking regulations (TPR). New RRFBs will be installed at “Centre and Paul Streets; Centre and Cushing Streets; and Centre and Clark Streets. Homer and Pleasant Streets are being installed.”

The Traffic Council held:

  • Newton Fire Department’s request to restrict parking on both sides of the narrow section of Troy Lane, as well as around the cul-de-sac, in order to ensure access for trash, recycling, and emergency vehicles. Parking would not be restricted on either side of the wide section of Troy Lane.  Held for a long-term trial.
  • ‘No Turn on Red’ restriction facing the Perkins Street northbound approach at Washington Street. Held to see if improvements could be made to the current signal.
