Moving North: Black Virginians in Newton, Feb. 16

In the 1870s, African Americans from Virginia began moving to Newton because of its reputation as a stronghold of abolitionists. So many settled in West Newton that they named a street Virginia Road. On Thursday, February 16 at 7PM, Historic Newton will present Moving North: Black Virginians in Newton, tracing the stories of families from the Richmond area who made this move, illustrating what they left behind and the community they helped to build after they arrived. In the talk, you will meet a World War I veteran, the first Black graduate of the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing, and other pioneers. The event takes place simultaneously in person at the Durant-Kenrick House and virtually on Zoom. Register here. There is a suggested donation of $10 ($5 for Historic Newton members) paid here or by Venmo @Historic-Newton.
