Last Thursday, the West Suburban YMCA held the grand opening for its second facility — a complete renovation of the former Boston Sports Club facility at 135 Wells Avenue. WSYMCA board chair Aaron Goldman described his first tour of the two years ago — and the modernization and transformation that was accomplished in the last nine months through a public/private partnership with the City, Commodore Builders, Dedham Savings, MassDevelopment, Annino architects and planners, and many others.
The new facility includes a four-lane pool, a gleaming four-court gym, three studios, updated locker rooms, spaces for remote work, the Village Bank Kids Corner with daycare, and an immense fitness center with modern strength, cardio, and functional training equipment.
Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, Mike Kennealy, lauded the Y’s collaboration and leadership, noting the Y’s importance in providing “place” — physical locations where community can be fostered.
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller spoke of the “happy, healthy, joyous” community of the Y and its work beyond sports and exercise to provide shelter for the homeless and support for food pantries.
President and CEO Jack Fucci noted that with the opening of this second facility, the WSYMCA is well on its way to doubling its 10,000-strong membership by the end of this year. He spoke of the importance of social-emotional development and the building of healthy habits.
Commodore Builders Vice President and General Manager (and WSYMCA board member) John Federico highlighted the collaboration with the City’s Inspectional Services and Fire Departments as well as many subcontractors.
Others saluted included WSYMCA Chair Emeritus Ned Morse and Chief Operating Officer Kim Benzan, State Representative Kay Khan, Charles River Chamber President Greg Reibman, City Councilors Rick Lipof and Holly Ryan, and Commodore’s Assistant Project Manager Sean Smith.
