The Public Safety and Transportation did not vote to approve any items at its meeting on 10/19/2022 (see Report, listen to the audio here). The Committee voted to deny the following:
- An appeal of Traffic Council petition TC46-22 on September 15, 2022, to add a stop sign at the end of Exeter Street and Berkeley Street.
This appeal was filed by Councilor Kelley on behalf of 8 households and direct abutters who feel the stop sign is unnecessary. The request for the stop sign originated from a 311 call and Transportation Coordinator, David Koses explained that the Traffic Council frequently received requests and approves stop signs at similar T intersections and that there is an implied stop when entering a T intersection and while it is not necessary to install one, it does add safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Several residents commented that the stop sign would help to increase safety. Most committee members agreed, that the cost to install was minimal and by a vote of 6-1 (Malakie opposed), denied the appeal.
The only other item on the agenda was held. The Committee had an in-depth discussion about the progress in implementing traffic calming throughout the City. The Committee received an update on Traffic Calming progress from the Director of Transportation, Jason Sobel, and discussed the effectiveness and how DPW evaluates traffic calming once constructed.
